By default, Adobe Photoshop CS2 compresses pages before it writes them to the scratch file. This does not result in smaller scratch files, because Photoshop must still reserve scratch space for the uncompressed pages. For slow hard disks or some SCSI implementations, however, reducing the page size allows for faster disk transfer time, and this compensates for the time needed to compress and decompress the pages. If you are using a fast hard disk or SCSI implementation, you do not need this compression.

By default, Adobe Photoshop CS2 does not use asynchronous file handling, data transfer that doesn't occur at predetermined or regular intervals, when writing to its virtual memory file, the scratch disk. Asyncronous I/O (Input/Output), can improve performance when acessessing the scratch disk.
Asynchronous file handling can conflict with networking software, causing damage when saving images to or opening them from a network drive.To turn this function off, use these instructions to run the UseAsyncScratch_OFF_D.reg file.
